Le vol du phénix

La tête dans la brise, l’air glisse sur mes plumes enflammées. Je vais là où le vent me porte. Je suis libre. Je monte aussi haut que je le peux, jusqu’à ce que je ne puisse plus respirer, jusqu’à ce que ma flamme s’éteigne presque, jusqu’à ce que la terre ne soit plus qu’un souvenir, une boule bleue lointaine, brillante et irréelle. Alors je plane comme on tombe indéfiniment. Mon cœur bat dans ma poitrine. Je suis encore vivant. Je suis enfin vivant. Et c’est la descente, vertigineuse, enivrante. Je rattrape les nuages qui me portent à nouveau jusqu’aux montagnes dont j’aperçois les cimes percer la couverture conteuse que je survole. Je m’engouffre entre deux versants à pleine vitesse. L’air siffle, je peux à peine tourner la tête. Sous mes ailes défilent les eaux tumultueuses d’un torrent qui me conduit jusqu’à la plaine. Enfin, je me pose. Je suis essoufflé comme je ne l’ai jamais été. C’est la fin du voyage. Demain, je renaitrais de mes cendres et je m’envolerais, à nouveau libre.

FWe had been progressing for several weeks in the more or less narrow gutters that crunched under the thousands of kiMy head in the breeze, the air glides over my flaming feathers. I go where the wind takes me. I am free. I climb as high as I can, until I can’t breathe anymore, until my flame is almost extinguished, until the earth is only a memory, a distant blue ball, shiny and unreal. Then I float as one falls indefinitely. My heart beats in my chest. I am still alive. I am alive at last. And this is the descent, dizzying, exciting. I catch up with the clouds that carry me back to the mountains, whose peaks I can see piercing the blanket I am flying over. I rush between two slopes at full speed. The air whistles, I can hardly turn my head. Under my wings, the tumultuous waters of a torrent pass by, leading me to the lowlands. Finally, I land. I am as breathless as I have ever been. This is the end of the journey. Tomorrow I will rise from my ashes and fly away, free again.
